January 12, 2021The cover art is very esthetically pleasing and the designs on the inside cover and the chapter headings are also pretty. The artwork is comprised of nautical designs that include seashells, starfish, an octopus, coral, sea horses and seaweed. Other than two grammatical errors/typos that I located throughout my reading process, I didn't have any issues with the writing. Going into this book, I didn't know what to expect other than I heard it was a retelling of the fairy tale "The Twelve Dancing Princesses" by the Brothers Grimm. I've heard of the original fairy tale before but I've never read it. Not sure if that is a good thing or bad thing but I'm not complaining because this was a whirlwind of a story. First things first, this author knows horror and the ways to creep out her reader. When I mentioned in the beginning that this book was a complete surprise, I meant the horror aspect. I wasn't expecting this book to have any horror at all. Her descriptions and the tension that she brings to her horror scenes are utterly terrifying. Several times throughout my reading process I actually had to put the book down and recollect myself because I was thoroughly spooked. The level of gore and eeriness in this book is on a level that I would not recommend this book for younger audiences. I enjoyed the world that this author created of living by the sea. It was easy to imagine and the atmosphere was pleasing to read about. By in large, I liked a lot of the characters in this book, which is hard to say nowadays. There is a mystery in this story that the reader gets to solve alongside our main character while also providing a little bit of romance too. As a reader, you question what is really happening in this book. Is there a curse on this family? Is there really magic afoot? Or is it all an elaborate nightmare had by a confused young woman? It was interesting to see how this book tied everything together in the end and fleshed out the villain(s). I will say that I wasn't a big fan of the epilogue in this book and could have done without it. The epilogue didn't ruin the book for me but it just felt unnecessary, in my opinion. Overall, this book was a great read and one that I would recommend. Just be forewarned that you may be looking over your shoulder every now and then. Mwahahahahahaha!!!
A Dark and Twisted Retelling!

May 25, 2022I purchased this book around the start of the year and it did not arrive on time which was the only downside to it, however after reading it - the wait was definitely worth it!
House of Salt and Sorrows is a retelling of the Twelve Dancing Princesses and there is no lie when I say it scared me. The plot twist is insane, I could not take my eyes off the page. Its eerie, very dark and there is horror (ofc). There is also a romance for anyone wondering and it may possibly become one of my favs.
Its a quick read and the book floppiness is AMAZING! 10/10 recommend this book.
