.To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDWARD H. COOPER, of Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Horse-Covers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in horse covers and consists in the special features of construction and novel combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim. 7

In the drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a blanket provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a side view-of my girth hook and Fig. 3 is a section thereof on about line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

The cover A may be of .blanketing jute or other material desired and is provided at one side of its front lower edge with a ring Band at its other side with a series of rings 0 and also with a strap D which has at its free end a snap hook d. It is also preferred to stitch or otherwise secure a sufficient length of said strap D to the cover to form a support for the rings 0 the latter being secured to the strap as shown. In use the snap hook at is carried through the ring B returned and caught into any desired one of the rings 0 to properly secure the blanket.

To the blanket between its ends is secured one end of the girths E the opposite ends of which are supplied with the girth hooks F constructed as presently described and to the blanket opposite these girth I secure the loops G for engagement by the hook. These loops are preferably formed from leather straps as shown as the friction afforded thereby aids in preventing the detachment of the hook.

The girth hooks F are alike being formed with the frame 1 having the cross bars 2 and 3, the top bar 4, loop or keeper5 and the hook proper 6. The cross bars 2 and 3 are arranged in the same plane and in a common plane with the opening 7 in the keeper 5 so that the girth strap passed up through the keeper around the cross bars and back and through the keeper will be pressed firmly upon itself to lock securely without the necessity of a fastening tongue and so that the strap can be conveniently adjusted as may be desired. The arrangement of the opening in the keeper in the same plane as the cross bars of the frame is an important feature in accomplishing the locking of the strap as it brings the strap lengths close together and holds them in such relation after they leave the lower cross bar of the frame, avoiding all danger of the strap slipping. The

hook proper 6 extends the full width of the frame in a straight line at right angles to the length of said frame and forms a square bearing to fit in the strap loop. At its free end the hook proper projects laterally beyond the frame and is inclined rearwardly forming an inclined wing 8 projecting from the end of the hook proper and aiding in guiding the hook into the loop andin securing it from accidental displacement when engaged with the said loop. By means of this lateral inclined wing 8 the hook can be applied to the loop even if the girth be drawn as tight as it is desired to use it the inclination of the wing 8 bringing its point, when the hook is turned to one side to position to enter one side of the loop when the hook maybe easily slipped thereinto and may also be removed by a reversal of said operation.

In applying the blanket to the horse it will be seen the front fastening operates topermit a proper fitting of the blanket at the front of the animal and also permits the blanket to be drawn closely to the animal at such point or left loose as may be desired according to the weather, the hook fastening aiding in such adjustment by securing the blanket by what may be termed a fixed adjustment upon the blanket. By this I mean that being once adjusted to the animals girth it may be left fixed and there is practically no straining in fastening the hooks so that whether the front fastening be tight or loose the front is not disarranged by the fastening or unfastening of the girth hooks.
