Fl RE-ESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 310,675, dated January 13,1885.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, TOMAS P. HALL, of Toronto, Canada, have invented a new and Improved Fire-Escape, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved fire-escape which is very compact, strong, and durable, and can be car ried in the pocket very easily.
The invention consists in the combination, with a reel or pulley and a cable or wire wound on the same, of a frame in which the pulley is pivoted, and of a brake-lever pivoted in the bottom of the frame, from one end of which lever a belt is suspended.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which a perspective view of my improved fire-escape is shown.
A reel or grooved pulley, A, is pivoted in a frame, B, surrounding the pulley, and on the said pulley one end of a wire cable, wire, or rope, O, is secured, which wire or cable is wound on the pulley and has a hook, D, on its free end. The under surface of the upper cross-piece of the frame B is rounded, so as not to injure the cable or wire 0, which slides on the said under surface. A curved brakelever, E, is pivoted in the lower part of the frame B, and the upper free end of the said lever is adapted to be pressed against the rim or circular edge of the pulley A. A chain, F, is secured to the short end of the brakelever E, and to the other end of the chain a belt, G, is secured, which is provided at its free end with a snap-hook, H, or like device. A cord or wire, J, secured to the long end of the lever E, has a cross-piece at handle K secured on its free end.
end of the belt, according to the size of the In using the fire-escape the hook D is se- 0 cured on some strong object in the room, and the belt is passed around the body and the snap-hook H engaged with one of the links of the chain F a greater or less distance from the person. If the person steps out of the window, 850., the wire or cable 0 unwinds from the reel or pulley A, and the pulley and the person suspended from the same descends. The weight of the person, acting on the short end of the lever E, presses the long end against the rim of the pulley A, and thus prevents the pulley from revolving and descending too rapidly. If the speed in descending is to be increased, the long end of the brake-lever E is pulled downward from the rim of the disk A by means of the cord or wire J. As soon as the said wire or cord is released the weight of the person presses the long end of the brakelever against the rim of the pulley.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The fire-escape consisting of the frame B, between and upon which is pivoted the pulley or reel A, around which is wound cable 0, and the brake-lever E, pivoted between and upon the frame below said reel or pulley, with one end connected to a belt and with its other end bearing upon the cable itself, and having a releasing-cord, J, substantially as and for 70 the purpose set forth.
TOMAS P. HALL.
