1 Claim.

This invention relates to portable chairs for small children and is especially concerned with type of chair designed for suspension upon the back or a large upholstered chair or the back: of an automobile seat.

The primary object of the present invention is to devise a chair that is very simple and inexpensive, light in weight and which can easily be kept in sanitary condition.

A further major object is to construct a chair frame in one piece comprising a pair of hookshaped suspension elements and an integral U- shaped seat member. In this connection, it is a subordinate object to form the frame of springlike material so that the suspension elements have a degree of lateral flexibility.

Still another object of this invention is to provide a chair frame of such shape that, when hooked onto the back of an upholstered seat, its

own seat is slightly elevated forwardly but when occupied seeks a substantially horizontal level.

The foregoing and other objects of the present invention should become clearly apparent from a study of the following detailed description when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Figure 1 is a View in side elevation and partial cross-section of a preferred embodiment of the present invention showing it attached, for example, to the back or an automobile seat.

Figure 2 is a view looking forwardly into the arrangement seen in Figure l.

Figure 3 represents a horizontal section looking downwardly substantially upon the plane of line 3-3 of Figure 1.

Figure 4 is a cross-sectional View taken on line i--4 of Figure 3.

Figure 5 represents another sectional view taken on the line 5-0 of Figure 3, showing the seat in its unoccupied position.

Figure 6 is a perspective View of the one-piece metal frame that provides the baseworl: of the entire chair structure.

With continued reference to the drawing, one of the most essential parts of the chair structure consists of a one-piece frame formed of upright arms 8 having hooks 0 and integrally interconnected by a seat it. The hooks 0 preferably have sheaths i2 or rubber or similar material adapting them to hang upon the back ll of an upholstered automobile seat or chair without damaging the fabric. The frame structure has elbows i3 that bulge into the lower part of the back It when the chair is occupied, thus permitting the seat 50 to assume a substantially horizontal position. t is for this reason that the forward edge It is normally tilted upwardly. The degree of tilt is slightly exaggerated in the drawing but it may be varied within suitable limits.

A slip cover 15 in the form of a fiat bag, open rearwardly, completes the seat of the chair. It snugly receives the framework 10, the arms 0 preferably being slightly sprung apart to assure this snug fit. However, the cover, formed of flexible fabric or plastic, may readily be removed for washing, and it is easily replaceable after cleans- A restraining strap i0 is provided to engage the child about the waist and it has looped ends formed. by rivets ll so disposed that the loops may be adjusted vertically to place the strap in position for maximum comfort and security. The strap of course is in two parts, adjustably coupled by a conventional fastening means 18.

In similar fashion, a strap i0 is slidably adjustable upon the upper ends of the rods 6 at about the level of the childs armpits. This strap also is in two parts, coupled conventionally by means 20 and is riveted at 22 to provide loops for the vertical adjustment. Near the loops there are attached armlets 23 through which the childs arms are passed, thus automatically maintaining the strap at a level where it engages the chest with a minimum of discomfort and a maximum of safety.

Obviously, some changes may be made in the illustrated embodiment without departing from the scope of the present invention and, therefore, I Wish to be limited only by a reasonably liberal interpretation of the appended claim.

What is claimed is:

In a childs portable chair especially designed for suspension upon the considerably higher back of a much larger chair, a one-piece frame comprising a pair of upright suspension arms interconnected by an integral U-shaped seat structure, said seat structure comprising side legs that are bent forwardly from said arms with a substantial upward inclination and that have sufficient resilience to approach the horizontal when the seat is occupied by a child.
