The present invention relates to accoutrements for infants and has for an object to provide a harness which may be readily applied to a baby.

A further object of the invention is to provide a harness so constructed and the parts thereof so cooperatively arranged with respect to each other that articles of interest to a baby may be attached to the latter in lieu of said articles becoming distributed upon the floor as heretofore.

A further object of the invention is to provide a harness having means for securing an infant to a chair and in a seated posture while at the same time permitting the infant to travel about on the seat of the chair.

Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be understood from the following detailed description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which the single figure thereof is a perspective view of an infant and a chair which are represented by dotted lines and having the new device applied thereto in an operative position of use.

It is well known that a baby upon being handed an article will examine the same or play therewith for a short period of time and then let go of said article, whereby said article becomes disposed on the floor or out of the reach of the infant thereby necessitating the mother or attendant handing the article back to the infant, whereby the mothers nerves become frayed and her health impaired in many instances, and the present invention aims to obviate certain of the undesirable features of the prior practice.

Referring now to the drawing for a more particular description, a chair is indicated at It having an infant ll seated thereon.

The new device consists of a harness which is positioned upon the torso of the infant in a manner whereby the latter cannot detach the same.

The harness includes a chest band l2, having a suitable fastening means for its ends, preferably a plurality of spaced apart glove buttoner fasteners having sockets l3 secured to one end of the chest strap and neb portions I4 for said sockets which are secured to the other end of the chest band by any suitable means. If desired, a buckle may be employed in lieu of said glove buttons.

As thus described, it will be seen that the neb portions may be snapped into position in the socket portions of said fasteners for fastening the chest band securely about the infant.

Cooperative means are provided for holding the chest band I2 approximately below the infants chest, whereby said band does not slide downward during use and said means includes two oppositely disposed shoulder straps l5 and i6.

The ends I! and I8 of the straps l5 and 46 respectively are attached by any suitable means, such as sewing or the like, to the chest band :2 adjacent the end of said band.

The end IQ of the strap l5 extends over the right hand shoulder of the infant during use and is attached to a portion of the chest band l2 which is disposed at the back of the infant, as shown by dotted lines in the drawing, during use.

Similarly, the shoulder strap It extends over the left hand shoulder of the infant and the end 2% thereof is secured to the chest band at the infants back.

Means are also provided for preventing the shoulder straps l5 and I6 from sliding unduly away from the neck of the infant and for holding said shoulder straps in an operative position, said means consisting of a chest-strap 2i having its ends respectively secured to the shoulder straps l5 and I6, said strap 2! being disposed upon the chest of the infant and comparatively close to his chin for cooperation with a back strap 22 which is similarly secured to the shoulder straps l5 and I 6, said strap 22 being disposed across the shoulder blades or back of the infant. It will be seen that, as thus described, the harness, when placed in position upon the infant, is attached to the latter in a manner whereby the shoulder straps will not slip off the infants shoulders and the chest band 12 will not slide downwardly.

An auxiliary strap 23 may be employed if desired.

Aportion of the strap 23, adjacent one end thereof, is attached to the chest band i2 by means of sewing or the like, indicated at 24. During use, the strap 23 is disposed at the infants back. The end 25 of the strap 23 overlaps the chest band 12.

The other end of the strap 23 is provided with a buckle 26 and, as thus described, it will be seen that that end of the strap, which includes the buckle 26, may be placed through the openings of the back of the chair H) or around the side edges of said chair back and said buckle 26 joined to the end 25 of the strap 23, whereby the infant is prevented from sliding off of the seat of the chair Ill.

Also, at desired times such as during times when the infant is learning to walk or has learned to Walk, the mother may hold the buckle 26 in her hand, said buckle being detached from the end of the strap 23 at said time, whereby the harness in conjunction with the strap 23 provides a leash.

A cord, or a like flexible member, 21 is provided having its end 2'3 attached to the chest strap l2 as shown in the drawing. The other end 29 of the cord 21 extends about the mouth of a recticular member, generally indicated at 3!, formed of interlaced and knotted together strands 3-2 for providing a net-work container through which the infant may visualize an article placed therein. As shown in the drawing, a plaited cloth is attached to the member 3.! about the mouth thereof and the looped end 28 of the cord 21 extends through said cloth for reinforcing the wall of said mouth.

In operation, an iridescent, scintillating article such as a ball of variegated colors or the like is placed within the device 3! and the pursestring-like portion or end 29 of the cord 21 drawn to a position for contracting the mouth 30, whereby the ball 33 is retained within the net.

It will be seen that the infant may play with the ball or toy with it as is usual with infants. At times when the ball 33 is no longer of interest and the ball isreleased from the infants hand, said object falls downwardly and would not be recoverable by the infant at the time when he again becomes interested in said ball except and unless an attendant assists him. However, it will be seen that thev infant may soon learn to draw the ball towards him by means of the cord 21 for again possessing the ball for a repeated use of the latter and without the assistance of any extraneous means.

During an early or initial use of the device by an infant, it is contemplated that the mother or attendant will tie temporary knots in the cord 2? for shortening the latter, whereby the ball is disposed approximately in the lap of the infant and as he learns to toss the ball about or the like, the cord is gradually lengthened, whereby the infants powers of observation become exercised together with his muscles.

The invention further preferably includes two other like flexible cords or strings, indicated respectively at 34 and 35, having ends attached to the chest band I2 and the opposite ends thereof attached to other and further articles such as the teething ring 36.

From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a baby harness constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as claimed.

I claim:

1. A device for the purpose described comprising a chest strap, means for securing the ends of said strap together about the torso of an infant, shoulder straps for said chest strap and means for preventing said shoulder straps from sliding oif the shoulders of said infant, an elongated cord having an end attached to said chest strap and a reticular member having a mouth, the other end of said cord having a looped portion attached about said mouth and'to said member for closing said mouth at times when said loop is drawn taut for providing acontainer.

2'. A childrens toy comprising a reticular member having a draw-stringmouth; and at least one object adaptedfor the amusement of children positioned within said reticular member.

3. A device for the purpose described comprising a reticular member having amouth, said member being'adapted to contain an object suitable fortheamus'ement of children, a flexible cord provided with aloop portion atone end thereof secured about said-mouth for closing the latter at times when said cord is drawn taut for securing saidobject within: said member, and means for attaching'the other end of said cord to a child.
