SAFETYLHARNESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.'
Patented Apr. 15, 191e.
Application led'September 7, 1918. Serial No. 253,026.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK H. BARNHART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomdale, in the county of Wood and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety-Harness, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to safety harness for children; and it consists in the peculiar and practically advantageous safety harness, designed for use upon growing children', and constructed and arranged as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings which are hereby made a part hereof:
Figure l is aperspective of the safety harness constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail section, taken in the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and illustrating the detachable connection intermediate the shoulder straps of the harness. g'
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section indicated by the line 3 3 of Fig. 1 and showing the detachable and adjustable connection between the ends ofthe body encircling strap.`
Fig. 4is an enlarged vertical section', taken in the plane of the line 4 4 of Fig. 1 and showing the slip connection between one of the side straps and the body strap.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
The major portion of my novel harness is preferably formed of leather though it may be of any other material compatible with its purpose without affecting my invention.
As part of my harness I provide two eyes 1, designed to be affixed in the body of a baby carriage, and equipped with rings 2. With the said rings 2 are engaged snap hooks 3 on rings 4, through which rings 4 extend the loops 5 of the side straps 6. Each of these loops 5 is formed through the medium of a buckle 7 and a strap portion which is connected to the buckle and has itsbight` portion disposed in one ring 4 and its major portion apertured as shown and carried through the buckle and upwardly therefrom.` At 8 the side strap is provided with a loop which is preferably formed by a strap section opposed to the outer side of the side strap and aiXed at its end thereto. At a point slightly above the loop 8 the side strap merges into a shoulder strap 9, the end of which is permanently fastened at 10 to the side strap. The two shoulderstraps 9 are connected through the medium of a transverse strap l1 which serves the important purpose of precluding casual slipping of the shoulder straps off, the shoulders of the child. Interposed between portions of the shoulder straps 9, and preferably the front portions thereof is a quickly eHected connection madeup of a tab 12 permanently connected to one shoulder strap and having at its free end a ring 13, and a tab 14 permanently connected to the other shoulder strap andhaving at its free end a snap hook 15 adapted to be expeditiously sprung into and out of the ring 13. Manifestly the detachable connection just described assists the strap 11 lin precluding casual removal of the shoulder straps from the child, and yet when it is desired to effect such removal, the same maybe readily accomplished after the hook 15 is disengaged from the ring 13. In addition to the elements enumerated my novel harness comprises a body strap 16, adjustable as' to length. This strap 16 extends loosely through the loops 8 on the side straps, and is equipped atone end with a snaphook 17 and at its opposite end with a ring 18 for the engagement of the snap hook; the said ring being carried in the bight of a loopthat is formed by the major portion of the strap and a buckle 19 carried at the end of the strap so that its tongue may be .engaged in apertures formed in said major portion.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that as the growth of a child progresses the side straps 6 may be increased in length as may also the body strap 16, and this without in any degree diminishing the capacity of the harness to securely hold a child against accidental release from the harness. will be better appreciated when it is stated that the holding function of the harness particularly attributable to the adequate manner in which the shoulder straps 9 are held on the shoulders, and to the fact that the b ody strap 16 in combination with the side straps absolutely precludes lateral movement of the straps 9 01T the shoulders of the child. I would also direct attention at this point to the fact that the adaptation of the body strap 16 to work freely through the loop 8 contributes materially to the comfort of the child and also permits of the body strap being diminished in length without in- This 1 terfering with the positioning of the detachable connection between the ends ofthe body strap at the middle of the Ifrontof the harness. 1;
in my novel harness is toretain the shoulder straps or'loops 9 in proper working position on a childs body, andithesaid body strap Vdoes not interfere in appreciable Ameasure with the comfort and freedomfof'movement ofthe child. Y
To apply and remove the vharness -it'fis simplyfnecessary tofnianipulate the detachable connection between the shoulder straps 9 and the detachable connectionbetweenthe ends of the body strap 16, and when'the harness is applied in the manner described it is absolutely impossible for the harness to become disarrangedno-matter what vcapers the child mayf practice.
vWhile.designedprimarily ffor use in conjunction with a baby carriage,"my novel harness may be used in' conjunction with-a baby chair orwith any other device to which it is applicable. f
Having described my invention, #what I claim: and fdesirefto secure by LettersPatent is:
1. VA safety harnessV for growing children comprising side ystraps `'having ll'engthwise adjustable lower loops, shoulder lstraps or loops into which the upper ptntirmsI ofthe sidev straps mergera transverse connection interposedA between portions ofv the shoulder strapsor loops, a transverse detachable conder rstraps or loops, 4and a body strap eX- tending loosely through the loops onvthe side straps and having an adjustableV loop at one end. and .a :fastener member in said loop.
