Description

L. M. PICK. SAFETY HARNESS FOR CHI-LDREN APPLICATION FILED SEPT,6, \9l8.
, Patented Dec. 17, 1918.
UNITE oFt IOE.
LOUIS M. PICK, OF NEW YORK,'1\T. Y.
SAFETY-HARNESS FOR CHILDREN.
eeann.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 6, 1918. i Serial No. 252,849.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS M. PICK, a subject of the King of England, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Harness for Children, of which the following is a specification.
My improvements relate to harness designed to prevent children from falling or crawling out of baby carriages, go-carts, chairs and the like, the main object being to simplify and cheapen such harness. while rendering the same more comfortable and efiective in use, as hereinafter set forth, the invention consisting in the specific construction and arrangement of parts herein described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1, is a perspective View of my improved harness, taken from the rear side thereof, and as assembled during use;
Fig. 2, is a perspective view of the adjustable cross coupling; and
Fig. 3, is a cross section of the belt showin one of the'lateral stays inelevation.
T, is the body or waist belt provided with the usual buckle b, for adjustably securing the ends of the. strap. S, S, are shoulder straps, or braces permanently connected with the rear portion of the belt by means of loops 8, s, which are formed by doubling and securing the rear ends of said straps S, S. These rear loops are slidable along the belt strap B, so that they may be relatively positioned thereon nearer or farther apart according to requirements in adapting the harness to the size and physique of the wearer. For a like reason said suspender straps S, S, are rovided with a cross coupling 0, which is ad ustable thereon so as to position the crossing of the straps as related to the neck and shoulder blades of the wearer, the most desirable location thereof being directly between the shoulder blades and well below the base of the neck.
The cross coupling C, is formed with parallel slots 0, 0, through which one of the straps S, is rove, the other suspender strap S, being assed under the bight (between said slots? of the first named strap, so as to be pressed thereby against the cross coupling C. The frictional contact and re-. sistance thus engendered between the parts involved is sufiicient to prevent slip under ordinary conditions of use, so that the cross coupling thus performs the function of a retainer for prescribing the juncture of the suspender straps across the back of the wearer. By this means the suspender straps S, S, may be retained upon the shoulders of the wearer without inconvenience or discomfort.-
The front end of each suspender strap is formed with a series of holes 8", for engagement with the tongue a, of a buckle a, attached to a front loop 8 These front loops s 8 like the rear loops 8, s, are permanent in size and shape, and of sufficient capacity to admit of the passing in or out of the ends of the body belt B, therethrough conveniently. The series of buckleholes 8', afiord means whereby the length of the suspender straps S, S, considered as a whole may be regulated according to requirements. A preferred manner of using the harness is to position the buckle end Patented Dec. 1-7, 1918.
of the body belt B, to one side as indi- 4 cated in Fig. 1, so that the free end of said body belt may be readily passed through or removed from the front loops 8*, 8 This arrangement facilitates the application or removal of the shoulder straps S, S, to or from the shoulders, etc., of the wearer.
D, D, are lateral stay slides strung on the body belt B,-the main function of these slides being to carry and support the linkeyes d, d, for engagement with the snap hooks h, h, on the inner ends of the stay straps h, h. The latter are also provided with buckles 72.2, 71. and tongue holes k h by means of which the length of the stay loops h it, may be adjusted according to requirements,-said loops being the means whereby the stays, slides D, D, and belt B, are connected with fixed parts of the carriage, chair, or other device with which it is desired to temporarily connect the wearer of the harness.
The parts of my improved harness, other than the buckles and snap hooks, are preferably made of leather, including the cross coupling C, although I do not limit myself in this respect.
By my construction and arrangement of parts I attain simplicity and cheapness combined with a high degree of adaptability. Ample adjustment is provided to meet varying requirements, and the application and removal of the harness is facili tated. Furthermore the coordination of straps is such that the harness acts not only ill to prevent the fall or escape of the occupant but also as a comfortable brace and sustainer.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
safety harness consisting of a body belt with means for adjustably fastening the ends of said belt, shoulder straps permanently but adjustably connected at one end with the rear portion of said belt, the other ends of said straps sing adjustably and detacliably connected With said belt, said straps being crossed right angles to each LQSEA TO other, a cross coupling adjustably joining said straps at their point of crossing near their mid-length, lateral stay slides on said belt and detachable adjustable stay straps on said stay slides for connecting the harness to a carriage or the like, all of said parts being applied to the body belt and the device as awhole removable by disconnect ing the ends of said belt.
