Abstract

A child safety seat arrangement wherein the child is secured to the safety seat by a harness (20). The harness (20) is then secured with respect to the vehicle by a mounting arrangement (26, 44) that is independent of any seat shell (30); preferably there is also a seat shell (30) that is itself secured with respect to the vehicle. Also disclosed is a child safety seat arrangement having a seat shell (30) with apertures (32, 32a) through which a harness (20) can be passed. The harness (20) preferably includes a main harness strap which is looped behind the seat shell, through a pair of apertures therein, to provide two shoulder straps to extend over a child~s shoulders. The disclosure also includes multiple pairs of apertures (32, 32a) to allow for adjustment of the height of the shoulder straps (20).

Claims (32)

1. A child safety seat arrangement including:

a harness to hold a child in a safety seat; and a first mounting arrangement to secure the harness with respect to a vehicle, wherein the first mounting arrangement is independent of the safety seat.
2. A child safety seat arrangement according to claim 1, further including a seat shell to seat the child.
3. A child safety seat arrangement as in claim 2, further including a second mounting arrangement to secure the seat shell with respect to the vehicle.
4. A child safety seat arrangement according to claim 3, wherein the first and second mounting arrangements are independent of each other.
5. A child safety seat arrangement according to claim 3, wherein the first and second mounting arrangements include shared components.
6. A child safety seat arrangement according to claim 1, wherein the first mounting arrangement includes a first connecting component to connect to an upper vehicle anchorage point, thereby allowing at least the upper part of the harness to be secured with respect to the vehicle.
7. A child safety seat arrangement according to claim 1, wherein the second mounting arrangement includes a second connecting component to connect to an upper vehicle anchorage point.
8. A child safety seat arrangement according to claim 5, wherein the second mounting arrangement includes a second connecting component, and the first connecting component includes an aperture to receive the second connecting component, thereby allowing at least the upper part of the harness to be secured with respect to the vehicle.
9. A child safety seat arrangement according to claim 5, wherein the first mounting arrangement includes a first connecting component, and the second connecting component includes an aperture to receive the first connecting component.
10. A child safety seat arrangement according to claim 3, wherein the second mounting arrangement includes at least one loop to receive a vehicle seat belt, thereby allowing at least the lower part of the harness to be secured with respect to the vehicle.
11. A child safety seat arrangement according to claim 1, wherein the harness includes two shoulder straps to extend over the child's shoulders.
12. A child safety seat arrangement according to claim 11, wherein the shoulder straps are provided by looping a main harness strap behind the seat shell.
13. A child safety seat arrangement according to claim 11, wherein the shoulder straps each include a loop to receive a vehicle seat belt, thereby allowing at least part the lower part of the harness to be secured with respect to the vehicle.
14. A child safety seat arrangement according to claim 11, wherein the harness further includes a cross strap connecting the two shoulder straps at a point below the child's shoulders.
15. A child safety seat arrangement according to claim 14, wherein the cross strap is removably attached to one of the shoulder straps.
16. A child safety seat arrangement according to claim 15, wherein the cross strap is removably attached to one of the shoulder straps by a loop of the cross strap that can be slipped on or off the bottom of the shoulder strap.
17. A child safety seat arrangement according to claim 11, wherein the shoulder straps pass through apertures in the seat shell.
18. A child safety seat according to claim 17, wherein there pairs of vertically spaced apertures in the seat shell, and the height of the shoulder straps can be adjusted by passing the shoulder straps through higher or lower apertures.
19. A child safety seat arrangement according to claim 1, wherein the first mounting arrangement can be adjusted to adjust the distance between the harness and the point or points at which it is secured to the vehicle.
20. A child safety seat arrangement according to claim 19, wherein the second mounting arrangement includes an adjustable buckle to adjust the distance between the harness and the point or points at which it is secured to the vehicle.
21. A child safety seat arrangement including:
a seat shell to seat a child, having at least one aperture therein; and a harness to hold the child in the seat shell, the harness including two shoulder straps to pass over the child's shoulders, wherein the harness passes through at least one aperture in the seat shell.
22. A child safety seat arrangement as in claim 21, wherein there are one or more pairs of apertures through which the shoulder straps can be passed.
23. A child safety seat arrangement as in claim 22, wherein the shoulder straps are provided by looping a main harness strap through a pair of apertures and behind the seat shell.
24. A child safety seat arrangement as in claim 21, wherein there are two or more vertically spaced pairs of apertures through which the harness can be passed, thereby allowing the height of the shoulder straps to be adjusted.
25. A child safety seat arrangement according to claim 21, wherein the shoulder straps each include a loop to receive a vehicle seat belt.
26. A child safety seat arrangement according to claim 21, wherein the harness further includes a cross strap connecting the two shoulder straps at a point below the child's shoulders.
27. A child safety seat arrangement according to claim 26, wherein the cross strap is removably attached to one of the shoulder straps.
28. A child safety seat arrangement according to claim 27, wherein the cross strap is removably attached to one of the shoulder straps by a loop of the cross strap that can be slipped on or off the bottom of the shoulder strap.
29. A seat shell for a child safety seat arrangement having apertures through which one or more parts of a harness can be passed.
30. A harness for a child safety seat arrangement, including a main shoulder strap which can be looped behind a seat shell to provide two shoulder straps to extend over a child's shoulders.
31. A child safety seat arrangement as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
32. A harness for securing a child with respect to a vehicle, as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
